Ekos Nature-Based Solutions Team Leader Aimee Hyland attended Tāne’s Tree Trust’s 2026 conference, “Beyond the ‘Canopy’ – Rethinking How We Grow Native Forests”, at the Beachside Conference and Events Centre in Nelson.
The conference explored practical approaches to establishing and regenerating native forests that go beyond traditional planting, including transition forestry, assisted natural regeneration, seed islands, improved monitoring and building forests that are resilient to a changing climate.
Day One brought together researchers, practitioners, iwi, farmers and government for sessions on emerging restoration tools, transitional land use and the Emissions Trading Scheme, and landscape-scale restoration and collaboration, followed by a panel on what the forests of the future will look like. Day Two was a field trip in Maitai Valley, Nelson.
