The world’s first biodiversity credit programme to be validated to the BCA/WEF/IAPB

Ekos BioCredita is the first biodiversity credit programme globally to be validated to the High-Level Principles (HLP) of the Biodiversity Credit Alliance, World Economic Forum, and the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (BCA/WEF/IAPB).

Our biodiversity credits are independently verified by McHugh & Shaw Ltd and listed on ClimateTrade (an international biodiversity credit trading platform)

The Ekos BioCredita Programme

The Ekos BioCredita programme enables terrestrial and marine biodiversity projects to access funding through the sale of high-integrity biodiversity credits.

All BioCredita credits are certified to our internationally peer-reviewed Ekos SD standard, independently verified by approved third parties, and issued, tracked, and retired through the Ekos SD Registry. They represent measured, reported, and verified nature-positive conservation outputs and outcomes — not biodiversity offsets.

BioCredita credits are designed for use in nature-positive sustainability reporting and carbon-related claims (when purchased in association with verified carbon credits).

Our first verified BioCredita project:

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

An indigenous forest remnant ‘mainland island’ protected by a 47 km predator-proof fence, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is one of the world’s largest fenced eco-sanctuaries, creating a haven for indigenous biodiversity.

All biodiversity credits issued through the Ekos BioCredita programme are independently verified by an Ekos-approved verification firm, and are issued and retired on the Ekos SD Registry.

Develop a Project

These five steps outline the process we follow to issue biodiversity credits to your project:

Step 1: Project Idea Note (PIN)

Prepare a short-form proposal using the Ekos SD PIN Template & submit to the BioCredita Programme for preliminary registration.

Step 2: Project Description (PD)

Use the Ekos SD PD Template to prepare a detailed project plan to fulfil all requirements of the Ekos SD Standard.

Step 3: Validation

Submit your PD to an approved 3rd-party validator / verifier (V&V) for validation to the Ekos SD Standard.

Step 4: Implementation & Monitoring

Use the Ekos SD Monitoring Report Template to prepare monitoring reports during the project period.

Step 5: Verification & Issuance

Submit your monitoring reports to an approved 3rd-party V&V for verification. Once verified, the project will be issued with biodiversity credits in an ongoing cycle for the duration of the project period (e.g., 30 years).

Note that biodiversity credits are only issued when the project has proven that it has secured demand for its biodiversity credits. For this reason, projects must include a biodiversity credit monetisation plan in project planning.

The Ekos BioCredita programme is not a source of money for your biodiversity conservation project (i.e., Ekos does not buy your biodiversity credits).

The source of money for your project is the potential buyers of your biodiversity credits. BioCredita is designed to help you win those buyers.

Biodiversity markets are still in their infancy. For this reason projects need to put lots of effort into finding buyers.

Ekos provides technical, management, financing & marketing / sales support for project developers.
