Ekos at the Silverdale Business Well+Wise Expo & Nelson Hospitality Energy Workshop

Ekos at the Silverdale Business Well+Wise expo

A lovely day out for our Auckland team - Gui Berringer, Hanna Beatriz de Moura and Shannon Gormley - at the Silverdale Business Well+Wise expo this month.

Gui led a kōrero on the importance of coming together and taking climate action collaboratively, followed by lots of chats about what that can look like in practice.

One thing that really stood out was how naturally the event brought wellbeing and sustainability together. It was a good reminder that climate and health are deeply linked, and that we are all part of the same big ecosystem.

When the planet is doing well, people are more likely to be doing well too.

Huge congrats to Michal Garvey from Foodprint for winning our prize basket featuring goodies from some of our clients!

Thanks to everyone who shared such thoughtful insights and chats. It was great to connect with businesses and people in our part of the world.

Ekos at Nelson Hospitality Energy Workshop

A few weeks ago, Ekos’ Sustainability Consultant Josh Leenhouwers joined industry leaders, hospitality operators and energy experts in Nelson for a workshop focused on energy resilience and the transition to lower-emission operations.

The discussion centred on the practical steps businesses can take to reduce emissions while also improving cost efficiency and energy security. A key theme was the growing need to plan for reduced reliance on gas, with electrification of systems such as commercial kitchens and hot water increasingly seen as a viable pathway.

Alongside this, speakers highlighted that some of the most effective gains come from simple efficiency measures, including lighting upgrades, draught reduction, improved equipment management and better use of controls such as timers.

The business case for rooftop solar was also discussed, with falling technology costs strengthening its role in helping businesses manage long-term energy costs and improve resilience.

Josh also contributed perspectives on how businesses can approach emissions reduction in a way that is practical and transparent, particularly as customer expectations around sustainability continue to grow.

The workshop reinforced a clear message: while the transition looks different for every business, there is growing momentum toward practical, cost-effective decarbonisation solutions across the hospitality sector.
